GTA 6 Can't Connect
— How to Fix It
Connection failures in GTA 6 Online are usually caused by one of a handful of issues: Rockstar server outages, NAT type problems, or a bad local network. This guide walks through every fix in order of likelihood.
Step-by-Step Fixes
Check if GTA 6 servers are down
Before spending time troubleshooting your own setup, check if the issue is on Rockstar's end. If reports are spiking on GTAStatus.com, you're not alone — just wait it out. Server outages at launch are common.
Restart your router
Power off your router completely for 30 seconds, then turn it back on and wait for a full reconnect before launching GTA 6. This refreshes your IP address and clears any stale routing that could be blocking Rockstar's servers.
Switch to a wired connection
Wi-Fi packet loss is one of the most common causes of GTA 6 connection failures. If you're on Wi-Fi, try an ethernet cable directly to your router. A wired connection eliminates interference and latency spikes that can cause the session to fail.
Fix your NAT type
GTA 6 Online requires NAT Type 2 on PS5 or Open NAT on Xbox and PC. Strict NAT blocks the peer-to-peer connections the game needs to put you in a session. To fix it, enable UPnP in your router's admin panel, or manually forward these ports: TCP 443, TCP/UDP 1935, UDP 3478–3480.
Clear console or PC cache
Corrupted cached data can cause persistent connection failures even when servers are healthy. On PS5: Settings → Storage → Console Storage → System Data → Delete. On Xbox Series X|S: hold the power button for 10 seconds for a full power cycle. On PC: use the Rockstar Games Launcher to verify and repair game files.
Update GTA 6
If your game version is behind the server's current version, Rockstar's matchmaking will reject the connection. Check for updates on your platform before launching Online. On consoles, make sure auto-updates are enabled so this doesn't happen again.
Check PS5 / Xbox Live / PC platform status
Sometimes the issue isn't GTA 6 itself but PlayStation Network or Xbox Live being down. Check PSN Status (status.playstation.com) or Xbox Support (support.xbox.com/xbox-live-status) before blaming the game.
Platform-Specific Notes
Make sure PSN is operational at status.playstation.com. GTA 6 on PS5 requires NAT Type 2 or better. If you're getting NAT Type 3, enable UPnP on your router. Also check Settings → Network → Connection Status to confirm your internet is actually connected.
Check Xbox Live status at support.xbox.com. GTA 6 requires Open NAT. If you have Strict NAT, go to your router admin panel and enable UPnP, or use Xbox's built-in network troubleshooter under Settings → General → Network Settings → Detailed Network Statistics.
PC players should run the Rockstar Games Launcher as administrator and use the 'Verify Integrity' option to check for corrupted files. Also ensure Windows Firewall and any antivirus aren't blocking the launcher or GTA 6 executable. Temporarily disabling your VPN often resolves connection errors.
Still stuck? If none of the above works and GTAStatus.com shows no widespread outage, the issue may be account-specific. Contact Rockstar Support directly.
